Repair or Replace Your Garage Door Opener?
Published October 22, 2026
There's no universal answer, but a few questions point the way.
1. Does it reverse when it should?
The CPSC has required reversing systems on openers made or imported for U.S. sale after January 1, 1991, and added external entrapment protection such as photo eyes in 1993 (CPSC). An opener that fails the 2x4 reverse test and can't be adjusted should be replaced.
2. Is the problem actually the opener?
If the door is heavy or binding, fix the door first. DASMA notes that safe operation depends on a balanced door, a working opener, and working entrapment protection together (DASMA TDS-167).
3. Is it a cheap fix?
Misaligned sensors, a dead remote battery, or a worn drive gear are often repairable. Ask a technician for a written price on the repair and on a replacement so you can compare.
4. Do you want new features?
Quieter drives, battery backup, or smartphone control can be a reason to upgrade even if the old unit works.
